Football Commentary Charts

Sport organizations began to follow in the NHL's footsteps and allowed for other female sportswriters to be given the same access as men sportswriters. This is what my safety net looks like when I step onto the high wire of live commentary to millions of viewers. This is what the start of one of the rides of your life would have looked like from where I was sitting.

Male reporters were unhappy with this and blamed the women from keeping them out and not being able to do their job. It was not until the year 1977 when Melissa Ludtke, a sportswriter from Sports Illustrated, was given the assignment to cover the New York Yankees playoff series but was denied entry into the men's locker room. Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn and other officials chose to discriminate against her based on her sex. Knowing that this would put Sports Illustrated in a disadvantage from other publishers, Time Inc. and Ludtke filed a lawsuit against Kuhn.

McCarthy et al. then analysed a larger sample of 100 hours of soccer footage from the 1997–1998 season and found similar results. While Black players still received more positive depictions concerning their physical characteristics the between-race difference regarding psychological characteristics was no longer evident . The third, and final, main attribute category of character attributes is related to statements made regarding, or the attribution of an action to, a player’s character or personality. This category was further broken down into the subcategories of general character and hard work.

This I have done with a process of retrospective research as if I were commentating on that match tomorrow. The style, the layout and the colour coding have changed little in that time. Commentators are creatures of habit, and, even though I could display the same information on a computer spreadsheet, the manual copying out remains part of the learning process. But all this indignation is meaningless, because as soon as bias comes into the equation, objectivity goes out the window. When watching football, it’s anything but difficult to underestimate that the gear used by the members is equivalent to it has consistently been, standing prepared to shield the players from the intense physical requests of the game.

The play-by-play announcer is meant to convey the event as it is carried out. Because of their skill level, commentators like Al Michaels in the U.S., David Coleman in the UK and Bruce McAvaney in Australia may have careers in which they call several different sports at one time or another. Other main commentators may, however, only call one sport .

The disbelief in the commentator's voice as he asks the question, "Emile Heskey. Could it be five?" is something to behold. With Manchester United down to 10 men at Highbury and Arsenal looking most likely to score the winner in extra time, Ryan Giggs picked up on a poor pass from Patrick Vieira in midfield. Another tremendous bit of commentary brought via the FA Cup, this time by Sky's Martin Tyler in 1999.

I remember it was the Jenas family that made a point of contacting several of us to confirm that young Jermaine was pronounced ‘Jee-nas’. Neither was right because the Dutch make a guttural G/H sound that is simply not inside the British throat. ‘Gullet’, he reasoned, was at least logically wrong, ‘Hullet’ was just plain wrong.

Many of the originals have been donated to charity auctions and club museums. Sir Alex Ferguson had my charts for Manchester United’s two Champions League victories framed and hung on his office wall. Match notes for the biggest games often span three or four pages but these are faithful representations of the style of commentary chart I compose for all commentary matches. Names and title information are usually in black, player and match data in blue, goal statistics in red and miscellaneous material in green.

This is discussed further in the limitations and future research section. The final sample consisted of 1368 coded commentator statements, 1172 (85.7%) directed at players coded as White, and 196 (14.3%) directed at players coded as non-White. The sample contained 382 unique players, 340 (89%) were coded as White and 42 (11%) were coded as non-White. While official numbers are not available, yeubongda.site these figures are representative of the total AFL player base when race is operationalised as a White/non-White dyad. The random sample of 50 televised game quarters contained 33 (66%) quarters that were broadcast on the Fox Footy channel and 17 (34%) that were broadcast on Channel 7. Overall, 1152 (84.2%) statements were coded as positive and 216 (15.8%) were coded as negative.
